Jean Roux (male) was born and educated in Geneva. After post-doctoral work in Berlin and Villefranche he became a curator at the Naturhistorisches Museum Basel in 1902. Roux made two major expeditions, the first to the Aru and Kai Island groups in 1907-1908 with Hugo Merton (1879-1940), a friend from his Berlin days, the second to New Caledonia and the Loyalty Islands in 1911-1912 with Karl Friedrich (Fritz) Sarasin (1859-1942), president of the museum commission.
